How to Create Die-Cut Lines for Stickers
What’s a Dieline?
A dieline is a vector stroke that shows exactly where your custom sticker will be cut.
It lives on its own layer, uses a spot color named “Dieline” and never prints—
it only guides our cutting machines.
1. Add a New “Dieline” Layer
In Adobe Illustrator, create a brand-new layer and rename it Dieline
.
2. Draw the Cut Path
Select the Dieline layer and create a stroke using the shape tool or the pen tool to outline the shape of the design.
Keep the path simple—curves should be smooth, no stray anchor points.

3. Define the Spot Color
Select your outline, open the Swatches panel, click New Swatch →
set Swatch Name: Dieline
(capital D* important!) and choose Color Type: Spot Color.
4. Stroke Only — No Fill
Apply the Dieline
swatch to the stroke, set Fill to None
, and use
a 1 pt width for easy visibility.
5. Turn On Overprint Stroke
With the path selected, go to Window → Attributes and tick Overprint Stroke.
This prevents knockout during printing.
6. Keep Artwork & Dieline in One File
Artwork should stay on its own layer(s) below the Dieline layer.
Do not merge or flatten.
7. Save as High-Res PDF or AI
Export your file as PDF (High Quality Print) or save as .AI.
Make sure Dieline
spot color and layers are preserved.
